Dutch arbiter Geurt Gijssen will be the one refereeing the revenge match Karpov-Kasparov which will take place in Valencia, September 21st to 25th. Gijssen is known for being the world’s most popular international arbiter. He was the one who directed the two last matches between them.
The organization of the match, which is cautiously taking care of all the details, had special interest in the arbiter being Gijsen, so that the reedition of the famousest battle ever is the most reliable possible to the one they had when they fought for the world’s title.
Gijssen participated recently in the prestigious tournament of Montecarlo, he was one of the classics in the chess Olympics and 2006, he was the principal arbiter of the match for the World’s champion title between Topalov and Kramnik.

It was during the Second World War in eastern Germany, after his house had been bombarded October 7th 1944. Maths teacher and expert in chess literature, 1980 he became international arbiter.
